Rhona Gorvy Art Collection

DESCRIPTION

Rhona Gorvy has been producing art since the mid to late 60's. With no formal art, management or business training, she proceeded to amass a large collection of experimental work. The paper work was collected in stacks, rolls and chaotic jumbles where ever there was space. The sculpted work was organized with the same method. The two primary challenges were: (1) 95% of the work had neither been dated, nor signed and there were approximately 8000 paper based works to sort through - in various locations; (2)there was a limit to the amount of space that could be used for storage. Space and available surfaces are particularly important in carrying on with one's art work - and therefore liberating surfaces was an important aspect to deal with.

I proposed to organize, catalog and help define a future for this incredible collection. After a 3 month process at Rhona's home in Johannesburg, South Africa - a categorization and ordering methodology had been defined and implemented. Approximately 2500 pieces were documented and information about each documented image added to a catalog database. I designed a storage solution for the work - which included an extractable table drawer to offer increased surfaces to work on. The work culminated in a solo exhibition that took place at Art on Paper in February 2006. This was the inaugural exhibition for Art on Paper's new premesis at 44 Stanley.
