A quick update:
- I got my computer back from the repair shop (complete with new screen, new logic board, and a new will to be mine for a while longer!
- I purchased a new bike! (And a motherfucker lock to go with it). I now look like the Mighty Yellow Raider in my super bright ALL yellow mountain bike – complete with super bright ALL yellow helmet. All I need now is a yellow beacon to light my way in the evenings, and my super identity will be complete.
-I’ve been training capoeira fairly hard recently cause theres going to be a ‘grading’ this coming weekend. I will be moving onto level ONE! (I don’t reaaaaally know what this means, but I’m totally into it. Theres nothing like being totally surrounded by people that mostly don’t speak the same language as you… and then attacking one another with super powered kicks etc! hehehehehe. Fun times, eh?)
- Its brother Adam’s birthday on saturday – the same day as the grading… And so I expect everyone and I mean ALL OF YOU MILLIONS OF READERS OUT THERE!!!! to sing happy birthday to him. Yes? This is a good idea, no? In fact what you should all do is wish him happy birthday in the comments to this post. Good luck shall be yours for at least 7 years after doing such a glorious thing.)
- And thats about it for now. Will perhaps upload a boat load of pics sometime soon.

Dan & Yuvals Dirty Weekend

Once in a while we remember the good old days… Not the days during my lifetime, but rather those that saw the competitive rise to colonial power… Featuring such wondrous nations as: Portugal! Spain! Great Britain! And of course the Netherlands! In remembering our rich histories of brutality, murder, and the always enjoyable ‘rape & plunder’ – we sometimes generate urgent needs to visit the powers that colonized us. I was given the opportunity to enjoy some British sunshine just last week!

Yuval was planning a trip to London-town. This meant of course that it was a perfect
opportunity to enjoy his company far from home. As it happens, fortune was smiling upon me, cause I have a number of friends hiding from us in London. Perfect! Preparations began, and before I knew it… I was embarking on my first ever Ryan air flight from Treviso to London (Stansted airport). (The whole trip there and back cost around Euro. 60… can you say Buono Prezzo? Hell Yeah!) Aaaaanyway.

I was met by Yuval at his old haunnt ‘Ye Olde Globe Pub’. (So many cute ladies in London this time of year, by the way) And we embarked on our 5 minute trek to our GORGEOUS 1st floor apartment overlooking Marleybone High street. A rather posh area, with rather posh people, and stores that sell VERY posh Yoga mats! A gorgeous apartment! Stylish beyond words… And can you say “Floor to ceiling windows in the lounge!”. Nice one Yuval!

Moving along:
Arrived Thursday – met Yuval and we immediately went shopping! First a quick Burger Kind whopper meal, followed by a beautiful pair of Merrel’s… (I know… I’ve decided to offer another brand an opportunity to impress me. Timber Land will always have a special place in my heart though.) We rushed back to meet two of Yuval’s friends for after work drinks. (Laura and Melissa) It was a good time. Followed by another drink at the local pub before EVERYTHING CLOSED AT 11PM. WTF???

Friday: Went to visit my Great Uncle Eddie. He’s looking good considering he’s in the latter part of his 80’s. And it was good to find out a little about the History of the Hirschmann clan. (Most likely going to post my findings at a later date.) Finally after this, I met up with Aliyah! WOOPEEE! (She didnt like my new shoes though :-) It was lekker to see her… and we were joined later by Yuval’s friend Lauren, one Tyson Cross, and of course Katie Jaye and her soon-to-be-hubby Tim! This all continued quite nicely until we were booted out by the 11PM CEASE AND DESIST DRINKING LAW I put Yuval to bed and went to have a cuppa tea at Katie & Tim’s awesome new place around the corner from Bake Street station.

Saturday = IRIS day! (Thats right ladies and gents… Daniel’s old school friend who is currently involved in her PHD in neuroscience… woah.) We three went off to the Science Museum. They have so many super cool little interactive displays dotting the museum. I wonder just how effective they are as educational devices – but regardless, there were kids running amok trying to outdo each other in maximum throughput of the puzzles. There were also these incredibly cool LED display pieces in the museum. A W E S O M E. Just when we were about to lose Iris, we were joined by David Broido. And off to see Hitchikers Guide! (And of course ensure that Tyson’s name was in the credits at the end of the movie!)
So: A full day on saturday, one might say… WELL: what comes after saturday? Well saturNIGHT! The night to enjoy the glory of London’s club scene! We attempted to head off to Fabric. But were totally freaked about another of London’s frikkin stoopid unwritten laws: “No Trainers or T-shirts into serious clubs / bars”. ARRRGH! So we were forced to return home for a quick shoe change and then venture forth towards our goal: FABRIC. (Turns out everyone was wearing trainers. Stoopid stoopid unwritten laws.) We partied extremely well. Our night was full of dancing and gorgeous women (whom neither of us spoke to) and very few trips to the bar. We were such good boys… So much for the ‘dirty weekend’ hehehehehe.

Sunday was Aliyah day again. And we hung out on Brick lane (super close to Liverpool St. Station.) Really cool neighborhood. Loads of interesting stores and markets. And of course the home of the ultimate in Salt Beef on Bagels! I finally got to meet and chat to Lucien (Al’s hubby) and see their MASSIVE apartment. I’m so glad all my friends have huge apartments with ensuite guest bedrooms! We met up with Tys and Lauren for an interesting Physical Theatre piece called Verissimilitude. Interesting. A little unnecessary nudity – weird. And they spoke german! WOAH. So that was the end of our eve. It was another full day in London town.

Monday was the final opportunity to see both Eddie and Katie. Which I did EXTREMELY successfully. Saw them both, drank too much coffee, packed my bags and RUSHED to Luton airport. It was a good little trip to London. Awesome to hang out with Yuval and of course wonderful to be with the London contingent of my address book! (And they have such cute accents!)

LED Testing cont…

TEST: Temparature at peak performance conditions
Results:
- The peak operating scenario is like this:
COL V I(mA) P(Watts)
R 2.2 385 0.847
G 3.5 355 1.2425 (Too high!)
B 3.5 355 1.2425 (Too high!)

To ensure the correct current draw: The system was 5V, Tip120, 4.7Ohm in series with R, 2Ohm in series with G, 1 Ohm in series with B.

The peak operating temperature is supposed to be 105 C, BUT at 70 C the Red channel fades…
SO: Heat sinking == SUPER important, OR lowering the current draw. (increasing resister)

UPDATE: Using R=9.4 Ohm; G=3 Ohm; B=4.7 Ohm I can limit Current to btw 170 & 200mA each. The lack of heatsink is apparent, cause each channel is hot to touch. As heat increases, so too does the total current draw. (all together = too hot to touch.)

Conditions: Using a 5mmX5mm Grid on A3 paper. Grid = 65mm away from LED. Lighting = daylight indoors.

Comparing 5 RGB Superbrightleds versus 1 Prolight RGB led:

Overall the 5 superbrights seemed brighter. However this test is unsatisfactory due to the simple fact that the superbrights were running at the normal forward current, while the prolights were running well below their norm. The solution is to test with a constant current sink circuit.

How to create a constant current sink: (Thank you Ohms law ;-) )
1) Identify the required current
2) Identify the expected load used by the LED (voltage)
3) Subtract the LED load from the supply voltage, and then identify a resister with the result and the required current from (1)
Ahhh now we know!

What happens when you’re drunk, and intending to spend as little money as possible in preparation of next weeks trip to London??? Well you decide on a whim to head off to the cinque terre for a 24 hour stint of course!

((What are the cinque terre??))

And thats how it all began. Drunken. Quite severely drunken. On both alcohol AND incredibly tasty food. I was sitting with four friends: Enrique, Bethany, Vladimir and Sasha (Vlad’s friend from moscow). Dinner was so ridiculously good. And I was feeling the effects of our regularly refilled carafe of wine… and someone said: “Why don’t you come with us to Cinque Terre tomorrow…” My resolve was strong initially! But thanks to some regular reminders that I might as well take advantage of the geography & fabulous company… well I relented! (Thanks to Enrique for the most persuasive arguments)

After a 5 hour train trip we made it to Montorosso – the cinque in the Cinque Terre. Found our hotel and then simply had an incredible introduction to gorgeouse beaches. MMMMM. We did a little walking around and eventually found ourselves at the busiest of the local restaurants for din dins. This was an experience. It took around an hour to get the waitrons attention, and when we finally did: BREAD!!! VINO!!!! the TASTIEST DAMN OLIVE OIL AND NATURAL WHITE VINEGAR YOU EVER DID TAST!!! and of course delicacies from the ocean. Y U M.

After dinner, we enjoyed a brief smoke next to our friend (and sculpture) St. Francis. And shared the recently purchased vino & tastiest damn biscotti you ever did taste! … Y U M!

The following day, we missioned around just a tad, and finally ended up doing an hour++ hike to the 4th Terra. Vernazza. Breathtakingly beautiful. Vineyards, lemon trees, ocean views, old men selling lemons, many MANY germans with ALL the right equipment… It had all the elements of a perfect hike. We bought a lemon from the local old-man-selling-lemons, and i was surprised that we could eat the skin too. In fact the only redeeming quality was the skin. It was deliciously sweet – while the rest was exceedingly bitter… Ah well! Anyway, vernazza was just beautiful. Everything about it was uber quaint. In fact thats how I felt about the cnique terre in general.

It was really a perfect encounter with relazed happiness. Albeit for 24 hours!
I will be uploading more pics next week – cause my computer is in for repairs. So please bare with me.
